The Bare Magazine: What were some of your favorite highlights shooting season 2 of The Tourist?
Danielle Macdonald: Getting to explore Ireland was so fun. It was my first time there and I really took advantage of any days off. We were based in Dublin but I took trips to the West Coast to see the Cliffs of Mohr and Galway, and I also went to Cork and Belfast on a couple of my weekends. I really loved the people there, had a lot of laughs, and just getting to reunite with the creators, Harry and Jack Willams and with Jamie was a blast. They're people I love getting to work with so doing it a second time really was the cherry on top.
Bare: What do you love about your character Helen and please describe any similarities/differences to your personality?
DM: Helen has a really good heart. She cares, she has a strong moral compass, but she also rambles and is still trying to find herself. I love that she's relatable to a lot of people and I love that she has all these oddball sayings. She's a joy to play and finding the way Helen spirals in season 2 was a new adventure for me too and was great to explore as an actor.
I think Helen and I are both positive people, follow our gut instincts (for the most part) and like puzzles and adventure. I would say we are different in a lot of ways though too. I'm not quite so ramble-y. I don't think.
Bare: When we met up in NYC you were excited to get home to LA and into a routine, after being away filming for so long. can you take us through what a dream routine might consist of?
DM: Yeah, I think one of the best parts and one of the hardest parts about working in this in industry is the travel and the constant change. It's amazing and exhilarating but also your schedule is rarely your own so it's hard to plan for anything or even just have a daily routine because your hours constantly change. Like I said, it's amazing but it also means when I'm home I crave a schedule and it's pretty basic but I like to wake up in my own bed, take my dogs for a walk, do some form of exercise whether that be a hike or a jog or a workout class, then have a coffee, then do whatever has to get done that day and I like to cook at night. It's the small things I think you miss.
Bare: How would you describe your personal style? is exploring different sides of yourself and moods through clothes something you enjoy?
DM: Yes and no. I think for work it's fun exploring a character through what they wear, and you do it for photo shoots and press events too, but maybe because I do that for work and its fun playing dress up, in day to day life I'm actually really quite boring. I like to feel comfortable and relaxed. I like a favorite band T-shirt or old cast and crew shirt mostly. And almost always sneakers.
Bare: Tell us about your choice to be Vegan and what are the main staples of your diet. How has it been a positive on your overall health?
DM: I went Vegan because I love animals and I don't need to consume animal bi-products to have a healthy and enjoyable diet. I love veggies, grains, vegan proteins, for me it was really a simple switch. If you inform yourself on what you actually can eat instead of what you can't you find that the list is incredibly long and it's not daunting like it can first seem. But it's a personal choice for me, and like I said, I love animals, they bring me joy so I just don't want to have any part in harming them.
Bare: When it comes to your emotional and spiritual health how do you stay grounded and balanced? what are some self-care habits you practice?
DM: I have close friends and family that I love and trust that keep me grounded and balanced, and for the most part I have learnt to talk and address issues when they arise so I don't deal with the stress of letting a situation boil over which is really helpful. I spend time lots of time with my animals, nothing heals like a cuddle from a furry friend. I also like to exercise because I genuinely feel the endorphins when I start my day off that way. They're just a few things that help me.
Bare: How do you take care of your skin to keep it looking so luminous?! what are your main products go-to's/routine?
DM: I have sensitive skin so I keep it pretty simple. When I'm not working I vary rarely wear make up. I wash my face with water every morning and night (cleansing and a gentle exfoliator every other day), and I usually stick to face oils instead of moisturizer because I don't react to it. I try to do at home quick facial massages a few times a week also.
