Ella Beatty

Ella Beatty paid us a visit on her one day off from being on stage in the Off Broadway production of Henrik Ibsen’s “GHOSTS.” Ella plays Regina alongside an epic cast including Billy Crudup, Lily Rabe, Hamish Linklater and Levon Hawke. When she arrived at our studio we were struck by her natural beauty, lofty stature and the most incredible mane of soft brown hair. Scroll on down and check our photo diary spotlighting Ella’s simple and elegant personal style, glowing makeup and glorious hair. She shares her thoughts on Ibsen, Ghosts, love of the stage, typical show day schedule, skincare and her biggest hero, her mommy Annette Benning. The show closes April 26th but catch this young gifted lady before she exits the stage on April 13th.
The Bare Magazine: Were you familiar with the works by Ibsen? Did you study Ibsen in school?
Ella Beatty: I did study Ibsen in school. I had worked on scenes from A Dolls House, but other than that I wasn’t widely familiar. I mostly knew about his impact on modern theatre and how influential and important he was. I’d read Stella Adler’s lectures on him and remember feeling really activated by that.
Bare: describe the kind of sadness one might feel taking in this story and how do you think it is resonating with audiences?
EB: I certainly think this play has the potential to make audiences feel sad. I also think the play is hopefully a lot funnier than people anticipate. What’s exciting to me is that people have a really wide variety of feelings watching our show.
Bare: in what way do you connect to your character regina? are there aspects of her personality that have been challenging to portray?
EB: I feel very connected to Regina’s curiosity and desire to find joy in life. She’s also someone who really fights for herself and her own story, I love that about her. There are some really quick turns and reveals in the play that I’ve found both satisfying and challenging to portray.
Bare: when did you become stage struck? what is it about performing on stage that is so satisfying for you?
EB: I was totally enamored anytime I was exposed to theatre as a kid, which luckily was very frequently. The feeling of being totally present is one of the most satisfying parts of acting on stage to me. I love being in a company of actors and feeling like a team.
Bare: who are some of your mentors, teachers and biggest acting inspirations?
EB: My mommy is definitely my hero, as an actress and as a human being. Everybody that I went to acting school with I admire hugely and am so inspired by.
Bare: describe your usual show day schedule ...including getting into makeup, and how that time is special. include a few of your key products to create her look.
EB: I usually try to take it pretty easy before the show and then make it to the theatre about an hour before. I really like to take my time doing my hair and makeup for the play, even though it’s pretty simple. I find that experience meditative and fun. Sometimes I like to listen to music, other times silence is really best. I’ve been loving using the Makeup By Mario Master Mattes palette for this job, it’s really gorgeous.
Bare: your skin is stunning. how do you care for it? have you had any recent challenges with it?
EB: Oh thank you so much! I don’t drink alcohol, which I think is probably the biggest help. I try to prioritize sleep and keep my skincare routine as simple as possible because I have sensitive skin, prone to irritation. I drink lots of water and laugh a lot! I think that helps.
Bare: you carry yourself with such grace, kindness and confidence. would you attribute that to some wonderful qualities about your parents that have rubbed off on you?
Gosh that’s so sweet. I hope some of my parents extraordinary virtues have rubbed off on me, I’d be very lucky! I certainly take notes from the way they show up in the world, which is with respect and empathy towards everybody.
