Joss Stone
We had the pleasure of a quick meet up with the British beauty and super songbird Joss Stone in NYC thanks to her longtime hairdresser and good friend Brian Magallones, who brought us together. We had a blast shooting and chatting about her upcoming Ellipsis tour, some great DIY natural product beauty tips, God’s Love We Deliver, style, and some of her earliest childhood musical memories / inspiration. For Joss good energy is everything. Thank you Joss for blessing us with yours.
The Bare Magazine: In NYC you performed a benefit concert for God's Love We Deliver. Tell us a bit about that.
Joss Stone: The concert in NYC for God’s Love We Deliver was an absolute joy to be a part of. The wonderful thing is that it raises funds to feed people in serious need in NYC every single day . It is a real and tangible thing going on and it is result beautiful. It’s all love . Aside from that it was fun as hell to sing with all those fantastic people.
Bare: Our shoot and hang with you in NYC was a recent highlight for us! Your longtime friend and hairdresser Brian Magallones got us together. Can you share a bit about your history?
JS: I met Brian when I was just 15 years old, I had just started my career as a singer and Brian was hired to do my hair. He always does a beautiful job . But aside from his obvious talent he is a really solid friend to me. From that day on he has been there for me and I for him no matter what . He is loyal to the core . Truly honest and funny as hell. I miss him so much and love any excuse to hang out with him, hair or no hair.
Bare: Since you began your career can you share in what ways the music industry has evolved? How you have rolled with it as someone who is very hands on with managing yourself.
JS: The music industry has changed a lot. I remember a time when all we had to do was make good music and people would turn up to the show to be part of it. It’s so different now . It’s a lot of self promotion which is odd to me. It is a new a different world. Everyone has a phone in their hands so every moment good and bad is documented, kinda cool and kinda terrible. It really depends how we look at it .
At first i was completely put off by it but now I have learned to embrace it and get back involved with the business. I haven’t had a manger for at least 15 years now and I have to say although my business is not booming it is a happy and healthy place. Because I choose to self manage I have of course come face to face with the sharks, with out the usual buffer the world can look like an ugly place but honestly it’s the best thing to have true knowledge of who and what your dealing with. This choice has allowed me to pull together a team of truly kind , caring and hard working individuals. Good energy is honestly number one for me.
Bare: Tell us your earliest childhood music related memory - where it was apparent to your family/friends and yourself, that you were naturally gifted?
JS: when I was maybe 4 or 5 My Dad let me ride along when he was picking up my mum from karate one night. He played me the Eric Clapton song , ‘tears in heaven’. Before he played it he told me the story that Eric had lost his son. I remember thinking about the lyrics - he probably wouldn’t know his name cos he was so young when he died and I couldn’t stop crying . My mum was sort of mad with my dad cos she knew how emotional I was . Honestly that experience was the moment I realized music was so emotional. I was too young to really get it but I wasn’t too young to feel it.
It’s kind of amazing how it can move us all so deeply.
Bare: Is it true you have performed in every city of the world? Where would you like to revisit most?
JS: No , not every city . Every country yes. I’d love to go back to Oceana and also Antarctica would be great to see again. Pretty beautiful world we live in.
Bare: Would you say your personal style has remained pretty consistent? How would you describe it ....and what are some of your most treasured pieces?
JS: I know people probably see me and feel there is a specific style as I’ve heard people say ‘ oh this is totally a Joss Stone skirt’ or something along these lines . But honestly I just wear things that I love when I put them on . I’d hate to be stuck in a style . As long as it’s comfy enough to move around in and makes me smile , I’m in.
My treasured pieces are my rings . They all matter to me a lot. I have my engagement ring , wedding ring (that is now slightly crushed cos I baked it in a donut by accident) my nans two rings , sadly my nan passed away a few years ago, we all miss her a lot. I have a ring made out of Dusty’s ashes, dusty was my dog who was with me for 15 years , i loved her so much , she is always with me now . Also I have the ring hubby gave me for our 3rd anniversary which has my sons birthstone which is an opal.
Bare: You're a pro at doing your own makeup. What are your tour go-to makeup and skincare products?
JS: I do love the Demi wispey lashes you can pick up in most drug stores , they are great for stage as they are a bit more dramatic than everyday . But honestly I pop them on if I want to feel fab in the day too. I really love Primavera products , the toner is lovely , the cleanser is very good for sensitive skin . I also love there facial oils.
Weleda products have been brilliant for the whole family . Great moisturizing creams , wild rose - soothing facial lotion is a go to for me . We use the Weleda kids tooth paste too, they love that and none of there products are harmful at all so that is a nice thought when putting it on our baby’s skin hair and teeth.
Honestly though I think the less product we put on our skin the better . But as we age we do have to moisturize so it’s important to find products that are lightweight and don’t interfere too much with our natural skin.
I use coconut oil to take off my make up then I get a clean face cloth and wash off the oil with warm water . Then I splash my face at least 15 times . If I have any skin issues I open up a vitamin e tablet and put that sticky stuff right on the issue . Do this at night and by morning your issue should be solved . (Unless you have a medical condition.)
This method has worked for me for dry skin , rashes , pimples , and sometimes it even works on a cold sore but usually the only thing that sorts that out is a valtrex . I have also used this on diaper / nappy rash. It is the only thing that worked.
So there are a lot of gorgeous products we can all enjoy but really if you have coconut oil , access to water and vitamin E. Your skin will be good.
