The Bare Magazine: Can you take us on a quick trip of your "SLIP" journey from the initial idea to making of?

Zoe Lister-Jones: I conceived of Slip many years ago. It was an idea born out of a sort of central question that was coming up in my life: what do we do with the feeling of wanting more. The “what if’s” that plague us. And that eternal restlessness that never fully allows us to live in the present moment. Then in quarantine, I sat down and wrote all seven episodes of the first season. Eventually TeaTime, Dakota Johnson and Ro Donnelly’s production company, came on board, along with Katie O’Connell at Boatrocker, and brought it to Roku. And within like a month Roku had given me a green light to series with not one script note. It was a dream.

Bare: Has creating this show and putting it out there been a cathartic experience for you?

ZLJ: Deeply cathartic. It’s a very personal story, one in which I’m wrestling with a lot of big existential questions, so every step has been pretty profound both personally and artistically. Finally sharing it with the world is thrilling. My hope is that the questions I’m asking are universal, and will resonate enough to inspire catharsis in the viewer as well.

Bare: You play 5 characters in "slip" how did their look, style, glam come about? was there a bit of you in all of them?

ZLJ: For sure. I wanted to play with the different roles we play in our lives, depending on who we’re with. Everyone is, to a certain extent, a shapeshifter, I think especially when it comes to love. So creating a personal aesthetic for each character was super fun. My costume designer Juliana Clark and my makeup artist Jess Panetta were wonderful collaborators in building out each look. Playing with archetypes, while weaving a bit of the original Mae into every world. There is one pair of Rachel Comey loafers that appear in every parallel universe, so it was about creating a sort of pastiche of old Mae and new Mae, which feels very much like the style evolution of life.

Bare: For our shoot you shopped some vintage goodies - do you enjoy thrifting and creating looks? how would you describe your personal style of late?

ZLJ: That was the most fun. Shout out to Cure Thrift in NY. They had such amazing pieces. I have always loved thrifting, it’s the ultimate treasure hunt. I used to go to church sales and come home with garbage bags of wild things. I think style is always an evolution, which is the beauty of it as a means of self expression. I guess of late I would say I’m into sleek architectural lines, monochromatic palettes, expert tailoring…

Bare: How have you been enjoying your platinum hair? do you have preferred stylist/colorist? Have you tweaked your makeup scheme?

ZLJ: I love being platinum. I don’t know if I can ever go back to my roots. Brian Fisher has been my stylist for years. And Daniel Moon at Hair in LA is the best for color. In terms of makeup, I haven’t really tweaked it since going blonde. But I’m a big makeup person. Love it. Love a bold eye. Love a bold lip. Love a good beat.

Bare: Do you have any tried and true tips to care for your skin and body during stressful, super busy times?

ZLJ: I use biologique recherche products almost exclusively. And Yonat Zilberg gives a great facial in LA. Sleep and breath work are helpful, as is exercise, but I tend to throw money at a problem before I actually change a habit. Take it up with my therapist!

Bare: Do you feel confident (comfortable in your skin) more often than not as you get older, or has it become more challenging?

ZLJ: I have loved getting older. I feel so much more embodied, and have so much more clarity about who I am, and who I want to be in this world.

Bare: Your piercings and ink are beautiful. does that creative self expression and adornment feel good? Do you frequent particular artists to get them?

ZLJ: Thank you! I have a lot of teensy tattoos and they sort of serve as a map of memories. Signifiers of moments, big and small. I do frequent the same artists both in LA and NY. Rachel Howe, Kelli Kikcio, Tati Compton, and Jayna Won. I love the ritual of body adornment, the intimacy of it, and the singularity of each person’s artistry.

Bare: Please list your top 5 bare beauty essentials. (skincare, haircare, facials, fragrance, self care, makeup)
