Jena Malone

Thrilled to have one of our favorite creators and muses Jena Malone back to bare. We were grateful she made time for us during her mega press tour for her new film “Horizon: An American Saga.” Chapter One June is in theaters now. She was as radiant and compelling as the first time we met only thing different was her hair color - now a sultry brunette. Scroll down and check our chat on working with Kevin Costner, photography, music, style, skincare favorites and our photo diary which ended with a glowing sunset made more magical with this extraordinary spirit.

The Bare Magazine: Can you share some highlights that made your Horizon experience so memorable to you ?

Jena Malone: I only shot for about 2 weeks on Horizon, so really the whole thing felt very magical. Getting to spend that time in Moab with my kiddo was really incredible. Working with Kevin as a director, after knowing him so long as an actor was a really a rewarding experience. He’s such a natural leader. I feel like i learned so much from watching him navigate those sets with such ease and awe.

Bare: The set photos you posted on your Instagram are stunning. Have you always tried to capture moments on sets? You must have quite a collection?!

JM: I've been taking photos on sets since i was like 18.... it’s just something I’ve always done, a tool in my tool kit to help me process and stay active in storytelling on set. I’m usually gifted such amazing locations and sets, it’s hard not to be inspired! I’ll put them all in a book one day. I’ts def on the list. Ha ha.

Bare: The film is broken up into 2 parts - will we get to see you in part 2 premiering in August?

JM: Well, now that the film is out I don't think it's a spoiler to say I'm not in the second film.

Bare: Moving to all your other interests and talents, we hear you’re interested in exploring becoming a firefighter?

JM: I'm def in a sort of gap year right now, a recalibration of what I love and what I want the next 40 years to look like. I’m deeply passionate about community care, revolution, mutual aid, and just how to take care of people. Fire management, community organization, EMT training, all sorts of stuff I’m dabbling in. We will see where I end up.

Bare: Will you be getting back into making music soon?

JM: I'm literally starting a new record right now with my first band, Jena Malone and Her Bloodstains. Very excited! Working with an amazing producer, Jamie Jackson, it’s just nice to be back in the saddle again.

Bare: Your style is so unique - how would you describe it? What shops and designers do you gravitate toward?

JM: Oh gosh, thank you! I think my style was one of the biggest things that went through the fire of becoming a mother. My relationship to clothes changed. My needs changed. My body changed, I’m still rediscovering. I’m happiest in some form of athleisure, though. I like being prepared for anything, though a little floral dress and cowboy boots has def become my "I wanna look nice" vibe. I love Partlow cow boots and I’m loving what Fashion Brand company is doing.

Bare: One of the many qualities we love about you is how open you are. Did your family provide a safe space to express yourself and your sexuality?

JM: I was def rasied very feral and free. I was gifted a unique perspective from very early on so it allowed me to constantly question the norm. My parents and my family are very supportive of my exploration as an artist, as a mother and as a woman. It’s one of the biggest blessings of my life to have that support.

Bare: Do you have any words of wisdom for up and coming actors? Or advice you wish you had when you started out?

JM: The only advice I can ever offer is this — the most important work you will do in your life you won’t get paid for. The work of life, gaining experiences, new perspectives, hard lessons, all of it informs your vessel as an actor. So the more the merrier!

Bare: On our shoot your skin looked so radiant. Have you added any new products or treatments to your skincare routine?

JM: Oh gosh, I’m not the best with skincare rituals. I’m lucky I get to work with Joanna Vargas sometimes, she’s an amazing esthetician in LA and New York.

M,ostly I barely wash my wash and just use lots of sunscreen. I love the true botanicals sunscreen and this amazing tinted sunscreen that JAO company makes. I also love a good face oil. I love Vintner’s Daughter, True Botanicals and Ursa Major's products.

Bare: Please list your 5 bare essentials (they can be anything).

JM:

- Filtered water with lemon and Chlorophyllin drops in it

- Period brand period underwear ( a must)

- A good hat (mostly baseball caps from my son’s school)

- A small bag with a carabiner... I love just linking a bag to a pocket and running out the door. I don’t always love having a purse.

- All over sunscreen!!
