Jordana Brewster

Jordana Brewster recently made a quick trip to NYC we were psyched to catch up since we go way back and we love her. She’s currently starring in the new fright film HEART EYES directed by Josh Ruben also starring Olivia Holt (who has been a Bare cover girl!) and Mason Gooding. The movie is a compelling mix of thrilling horror slasher and sexy romantic comedy…just in time for Valentines day. Scroll on down and find out more about this gorgeous Yale graduate who has been acting since 1995, a true girls girl with grit, mom to 3 boys who regularly supports Baby2Baby, she is always up for a challange and an opportunity to grow.

The Bare Magazine: Can you share some of the highlights making Heart Eyes?

Jordana Brewster: Back in the day, making a movie felt like camp. For example, when I filmed the Faculty, the entire cast stayed at the Doubletree Hotel in Austin, Texas. We hung out on our off time and relied on each other. We shot Heart Eyes over the summer in Auckland, New Zealand. This created a real camp vibe on set. We were all in it together: we went out to dinner, rehearsed in each other’s rentals, etc. I also loved the crew in New Zealand.

Bare: What makes this thriller so special?

JB: Josh Ruben (our director) has a unique and particular vibe. He is super specific about musical and film references and brings so much energy to the project. I knew he would hit the right tone (which is what makes this film unique) because it’s scary and gruesome as hell, and it’s also campy and lighthearted and romantic. How many directors can strike that balance?

Bare: You’ve been working as an actor for 30 years, can you describe how the business has changed and how you have adapted?

JB: Oh man. Back in the day it was more simple. There was a specific ladder or steps to become a successful actor (or at least it seemed that way). Being in the top five box office successes for the weekend was the goal. Having a high IMDB pro score was the goal. Getting offers and campaigns and magazine covers was the goal.

Now it’s more difficult to measure success. The metrics are all over the place. Most of the time I just hope whatever I am working on will be seen.

The positive part of this is that I can ask myself different questions before starting a project. Now I ask myself, “Will this challenge me? Will I grow? Is this something I haven’t done?”

I’ve also adapted to the business by relying on humility and hard work. I work with an acting coach, I put myself on tape, I fight for the projects I want.

Bare: Since having children, how do you balance and prioritize your time and choices when working on a project?

JB: My dream would be to work summers when they are out of school. I got my wish with Heart Eyes. However, that’s not always the case. I always consider the impact that my absence will have on them. I also try to remember that I’ve worked so hard to get where I am. With each project, I talk to them, I talk to my husband, and I figure out whether it works for our family.

Bare: Your Instagram posts are quite creative and in your own voice, not someone you hired to manage your social media. How do you navigate it and what's always important for you to express/share in your posts?

JB: I’m a girl’s girl. I like showing authenticity on my feed. If something seems orchestrated or filtered, I steer away. So I guess it’s a bit of a spontaneous mish mosh.

Bare: Are there any projects or people you're really interested in working with and anything you would like to do that you haven't yet in your career?

JB: I love your client, Keri Russell. Her work on the Diplomat is sooooooo good. I’d love to work on a series like The Diplomat. The dialogue is smart, the characters are sexy. I’d also love to adapt a novel and develop my own series. I have a twisted sense of humor - Broad City, Fleabag, and Killing Eve are my vibe.

Bare: Give us a breakdown of your perfect meal?

JB: Tequila on the rocks, delicious warm focaccia drenched in olive oil, followed by Cacio e Pepe pasta.

Bare: You are an avid reader. What books are you currently top on the shelf?

JB: Yes, I love to read! At the moment I’m reading Orbital by Samantha Harvey and Eurotrash by Christian Kracht. Both are amazing.

Bare: Please list your top 5/6 Bare essentials (they can be anyone or anything).

JB:

  • My Woodway treadmill

  • A good book

  • Baths

  • Nose strip

  • iPhone

  • Almond oil

  • My three boys.
