Katrina Law
We recently took a road trip from Brooklyn to Cali. In addition to enjoying the warmer climate, we got the opportunity to chat with and photograph gorgeous Katrina Law, who stars on one of TV’s most popular shows, NCIS. Like her character, Jessica Knight, Katrina is tough, athletic, sharp, tenacious and witty. Along with Wilmer Valderrama (who you’ll read more about in a moment), she is also starring in a special cross-over episode, tonight March 28th, that features members of the NCIS cast and NCIS: Hawaii. During our time with Katrina, she discussed the show, her career, style and what she looks for in a partner. We’re so glad she decided to partner with us for the day. Enjoy the results, below.
The Bare Magazine: While shooting you for this piece in an area where there was hardly anyone around yet you were spotted! They pointed and said "NCIS!?" How does it feel to be a part of the number one show in the world?
Katrina Law: As you experienced first hand, the popularity of the show sneaks up on you! I feel bad for the man having witnessed our failed attempts to create the perfect Boomerang, haha!
NCIS is a low key juggernaut. It is television royalty and somehow it’s easy to forget just how massive the show it is domestically and internationally…until you get spotted making a fool of yourself for social media :) Getting cast on the number one show in the world is daunting, humbling, and beyond exciting. Mark Harmon and the original cast members laid the tracks. I am just grateful to be able to jump on and ride the train.
Bare: Can you take us through an average shoot/work day - morning to night?
KL: My day usually starts with a 3:45am, 3:50am, 3:55am, and 4am alarm set. I leave the house fortified with coffee to arrive at the gym at 5am. Workout while day dreaming about more sleep. Shower in my trailer on set while appreciating the surprising amount of water pressure and then I am in the makeup chair by 6am. My makeup artist fixes the hot mess that I am in the mornings and then at 6:45am I head over the hair trailer. We usually do our blocking for the first scene at 7am. Then it’s back to hair so my hair stylist can finish her detangling magic. We start shooting our first scene at 7:30am. Visit the crafty table 5-9 times and ask for apples and seaweed instead of the salt and vinegar chips that I desperately want. Break for lunch at 1pm. Play a little 9 square with the crew during our lunch break. Then it’s back to work where we end up wrapping usually around 7pm. Drive home. Spend the evening snuggling with my little girl and husband and just sit in appreciation and gratefulness for all of the blessings in my life. Chase my daughter around while trying to get her to brush her teeth and shower. Read Room on the Broom until my eyes go crossed. Hopefully I’m asleep by 9:30pm and not scrolling through Instagram until 12am.
Bare: Do you have any desire to direct someday?
KL: I have recently thought about dipping my toe into directing, but to be honest, writing is what has caught my attention lately. I just finished writing a short with my husband, Keith Andreen, that we plan on shooting this summer.
I think there is something soothing about writing. To be completely immersed in a world of your own creation is like reliving my childhood. I can do anything, be anyone, and go anywhere I want. There are no limits. Whether or not the writing is good remains to be seen, but the process of writing and creating is immensely satisfying in a way that I would never have expected.
Bare: What have been a few career game changing highlights?
KL: My initial career game changer was Spartacus. It was my first series regular gig. We shot in gorgeous New Zealand, it was swords and sandals. I was surrounded by a talented cast, crew, and writing staff. I couldn’t have asked for a more epic project to be a part of.
Arrow was probably the next game changer for me. Getting thrown into the DC world and being given the opportunity to bring someone like Nyssa to life was a dream come true.
And then all roads lead to NCIS. NCIS has turned out to be the dream job that I never even knew I wanted. Great cast. Great crew. Great writers. Great producers. Amazing fans. I’m praying for Season 20 and beyond.
Bare: How about an off day; what's that like for you? Are there hobbies or side passions, indulgences or escapes you enjoy?
KL: Days off are usually spent blissfully sleeping in until 7:30am and then finding ways to spend time together as a family. Lots of pool time and cooking in the kitchen. So simple and lovely and my favorite part of the week.
Bare: What qualities are super important to you in a partner or good friend?
KL: A wicked sense of humor is a must. Laughter has been the magical ingredient to my marriage. My husband's sense of humor was one of the biggest things that attracted me to him. It has helped us get through our roughest patches and has created some of our most cherished memories. I love seeing that my daughter has already developed a cheeky sense of humor and she’s already cracking jokes that are pretty impressive for a three year old.
Bare: Can you fill us in on how you care for that gorgeous skin? What's the regime and go-to products?
KL: Thank you for the compliment!
My skin is always a work in progress and like most, I feel like it’s trial and error until you find something that works for you. I tend to have dry, sensitive skin that reacts very quickly to the sun and chemicals and I switch my products according what is needed for my skin at the moment. I am always a huge fan of Shiseido and Epionce. My recent go to is Babor. I’ve been having issues with breaking outs because my skin is being covered with makeup for 13 hours out of the day 5 day a week. With the pores being clogged and then the skin being stripped from the heavy cleaning, I realized I had damaged my skins natural barrier. The pre and probiotics in Babor seem to be working miracles at restoring my skin's natural defense.
Bare: Recently you connected with a stylist who has been very influential - can you describe how your style is evolving?
KL: Jessica Paster has pulled me from the dredges of my early 2000, oversized men’s sweatpants, food stained sweatshirt, clown car of an unfortunate closet, and has thrust me into the glow of high fashion.
Jessica is a force nature and exceptionally great at what she does and I tend to work very well with strong women. I just do what she tells me to do, ask no questions, and it seems to be working out for everyone:)
Bare: What are your top 5 Bare essentials - they can be anything?
KL:
Daughter
Husband
iPhone
Hat
Lip Balm
Photos and makeup: Tina Turnbow using Ogee and Cle de Peau
Hair: Lucy Gedjeyan
Styling: Jessica Paster
